Angel on the Sidewalk
The bright sun and blue skies screamed Spring that Saturday afternoon. “I’m so sorry I can’t help you,” my husband said as he hugged me tight,” but you know that medical residents are expected to work long shifts and get no free weekends during first year of training.” We were in a new country, a new city and had no friends, which forced me to navigate my way through our new reality on my own. I grabbed the Yellow Pages, the only resource before cell phones and GPS’ existed, searching for a park in the area. Venturing out was an attempt to calm my lonely heart as much as our…

Those big piles and new life
March 31, 2022 / Comments Off on Those big piles and new lifeA beautiful and timely post from my friend Beverly Varnado Those big piles and new life The big pile gets bigger and we’re asking, “When does this end?” A whole bunch of stuff, one thing after another as my mother used to say. It’s happening with world events but add to that what may also be happening in our personal lives, and all this piling on can be enough to leave us gasping for air. But could it be that in the middle of that big pile may be something that bears the promise of new life? Reminds me of the time that stone got rolled over the tomb—just a…

Restoration Project- Kintsugi Style
“Can you tell me a little more about that restoration business?” I asked my niece. “Well,” she smiled “Technically it’s the repair or renovation of works that have already sustained decay with the attempt to restore a work to its original, undamaged appearance”(britannica.com) I grabbed another cup of coffee and sank in my favorite chair to savor my improvised lecture. “But there are other techniques used to restore pieces. Have you ever heard of Kintsugi?” Knowing that her hospital administrator aunt has limited knowledge of the art world, she barely paused for my response. “It’s a Japanese technique where they take broken pottery and instead of trying to put it…

The Training Run that Became a Discovery Run
“Are you crazy? It’s 95 degrees outside. How can you go running in that heat?” My husband voiced what my brain screamed. “I can’t skip my training” I responded. “And I’m so busy today that I can’t do it any other time.” Why in the world did I sign up for this half marathon! I left my house and entered a furnace. My struggle juggling a water bottle, phone and earphones merely reflected my struggle in juggling life’s “balls” as a mom, wife, business owner and on top of that half marathon runner. My legs weighed as much as my heart making my pace slower than a walker that passed…

The Day My Run Took An Unexpected Turn
“Remember to stay inside the neighborhood,” my husband warned me. “That main road is too isolated.” “But it’s my long run training day,” I responded. “The lady next door told me that if I take a right that road takes me into the neighborhood next to this one. It’s a loop that ends up right back here.” “We’re vacationing in the country, remember? What if you run into a wild animal, or a wild person out there?” he insisted. “Ok, ok,” I said. “Don’t worry!” I grabbed my phone and ran out the door before he could say anything else. The sunny skies and summer breeze welcomed me with a…
