The Real Man behind the Robe
The tension in the courtroom was palpable. The elegance of the room only added to the solemnity in the air. The wood- paneled walls displaying portraits of former justices framed the room, packed with people waiting for the hearing to begin. American flags adorned each corner, like soldiers protecting the justice proclaimed. The silence ended when the sound of a gavel echoed throughout the courtroom, giving way to a procession of nine justices dressed in black robes who took their assigned seats behind the bench. Throughout the proceedings Justice Harold Melton remained quiet and focused, concentrating on the matter before him. We first met many years ago during college, so I…

Do You Know How To Float?
“We’re not moving to the beach, right?” My husband joked. “Why are you taking so many floaties? “ We rearranged the trunk for the tenth time. “You know the water is rough this time of year, and it makes me nervous,” I said. “We’ll have to wait for them to learn how to swim perfectly. My mom always tells me how my grandmother almost drowned in the ocean when she was young. The waves were so strong she could hardly breath.” “So, what happened?” he asked. “She floated on her back until a fisherman rescued her.” “I guess we need to teach the children how to float then!’ he said.…

Relationships: Are yours Healthy or Unhealthy?
She slammed the front door and sprinted up the stairs. “She’s mad at me…again!” my teenage daughter cried as she plopped on my bed. “I don’t know what to do mom. I feel anxious every morning wondering if she’ll be happy or get mad at me for no reason. She always gossips about other girls and is negative all the time!” “Honey, it’s time to talk about healthy and unhealthy relationships” I said. “How do we know the difference?” she asked. “Well, let’s find out!” I picked up the book I had been reading, The Search for Significance, by Robert McGee. “These are signs of an unhealthy relationship.” When either…

The Day I left Home to Come Home
“Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight,” the captain announced. My husband and I held hands and said a quiet prayer. Tears flowing down our faces spoke what our mouths couldn’t express. I closed my eyes and tried to obey the captain. The plane took off, leaving behind not only our country, but a piece of my heart as well. It seemed like yesterday when my husband surprised me with the news: “Honey, I just got an offer to work in the United States. It’s a private practice in a college town near Atlanta.” “What?” I cried “But we don’t know anyone there, and our whole family’s here!” “But think…

Trust
“Dad wants you to take this.” I handed my son a pill along with a glass of water. He stretched out his hand to grab the medicine without taking his eyes off of the TV, swallowed it and gave me the empty glass. “Incredible!” I said to my husband. “His 9-year-old mind doesn’t even question what we’re giving him.” “Yes,” he responded. “He trusts us enough to place his whole life in our hands, knowing without a doubt that we’ll never do anything to hurt him.” Without realizing it, my boy’s thoughtless response reminded me of a truth that the Lord emphasizes throughout the Bible. “Trust in the Lord with…
