Do you Know Where you’re Going?
“Follow the arrow, it will direct you to the exit door” the guide said. “You can return tomorrow when the power is restored.” My heart raced as I grabbed my husband’s arm and our little children clutched mine. We tried to follow the guide’s instructions, navigating our way through the darkness of the tunnel and the mute crowd around us. Suddenly, a light flickered up above, forming an arrow pointing to an exit door. After the longest fifteen minutes in my life, we found our way out into the morning sun in the crowded amusement park. Everyone in our group erupted in smiles and sighs of relief. “I thought we’d…

Do you Trust like a Melon?
It was three o’clock in the morning when the cell phone rang. No, it shrieked. I was so sound asleep I didn’t know if it was an ambulance or a tornado siren in my bedroom. “Who is it?” My heart pounded and my body shook. “Calm down,” my husband said as he picked up his phone. One of the hardest things about having a physician husband is surviving night calls. That’s the other side of medicine that only the family gets to experience. “Why do you always expect bad news?” he was asleep before I could respond. It took my heart a while to calm down and my body to…

The Preservation Project
“Are you ready for your lesson?” my niece said. “The first part of my training would be in restoration and second part has to do with preservation or conservation.” I put my phone on speaker while I grabbed my coffee and sank in my comfy chair. “Once the piece is restored then it’s preserved or protected from future damage. That is referred to as art conservation.” (Britannica.com) We chatted about her future plans and dreams until I ran out of coffee, and she had to go. The conversation ended, but my mind didn’t. To preserve or protect from future damage… Isn’t that what God does when we choose to surrender…

Do You Know How To Float?
“We’re not moving to the beach, right?” My husband joked. “Why are you taking so many floaties? “ We rearranged the trunk for the tenth time. “You know the water is rough this time of year, and it makes me nervous,” I said. “We’ll have to wait for them to learn how to swim perfectly. My mom always tells me how my grandmother almost drowned in the ocean when she was young. The waves were so strong she could hardly breath.” “So, what happened?” he asked. “She floated on her back until a fisherman rescued her.” “I guess we need to teach the children how to float then!’ he said.…

Running the Race
When I entered my forties, I determined to give myself a challenge to celebrate the beginning of “the second half of my life,” so I signed up to run a half-marathon. I had no idea how to achieve it, so I researched about it, which introduced me to terms that were like a foreign language: speed work, tempo, and long runs. The local paper advertised a group run every Saturday morning, and I decided to join it. I awakened extra early for the first run and dressed comfortably in my daughter’s PE shorts and t-shirt. I grabbed an old, chunky iPod abandoned in a kitchen drawer along with my son’s…
