The Other Side of Medicine

Do You Believe in Miracles?

He walked into the ICU like he did every day, except his heart weighed heavier than usual.
He had been chosen by the patient’s family to deliver the news, a heart wrenching task which was harder than his fourteen years of medical training.
Family members had spent days in the waiting room, praying for their dear mother and trusting that the doctors were doing their best to get her well.
He held the lady’s hand and took a deep breath.
“You know you’ve been in a coma, and we didn’t know if you were going to make it.” He looked away, praying for the right words.
“Unfortunately, in order to save your life, we had to amputate your leg. I’m so sorry.”

She looked at him with a big smile.

“I know.” Her voice was faint but strong.

“Oh, someone talked to you already?” he asked.

“Yes,” she responded. “Jesus.”

His jaw dropped as she proceeded to explain.

“Last night, Jesus appeared to me. He said that my kidneys would recover, but I would lose my leg. He still has plans for me here, so everything will be all right.”

The motivational speech in his mind flew out the window, along with his heavy heart.

He believed in Jesus and His Word, but this time the Word literally came to life before his eyes.

This case sparked his curiosity, so he decided to ask other colleagues about it.

The more he recounted his experience the more he learned of similar testimonies from doctors in different specialties.

The Bible describes many miraculous stories where Jesus healed many regardless of their age, nationality or religious affiliation, just like all those patients.

Even though every testimony was different, they had two common characteristics

  1. They believed-
  • They believed that Jesus was the Son of God

… because whoever approaches Him must trust that He does exist, and He becomes a Rewarder to those who seek Him out. (Hebrews 11:6) CJB

  • They believed that what He said was true

God is not a human who lies or a mortal who changes His mind. (Numbers 23:19)

  • They believed in His power and authority

But the officer answered, “Sir, I am unfit to have you come into my home. Rather, if you will only give the command, my orderly will recover. For I too am a man under authority. (Matthew 8:8-9)

  1. They prayed-
  • “Don’t worry about anything, on the contrary, make your requests known to God by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving.” (Philippians 4:6-80
  • Therefore, let us confidently approach the throne from which God gives grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace in our time of need. (Mark 11:24)

A celebration erupted in the ICU that day and the faith of many was impacted as a result of that experience.

As the wife of that doctor who had a front row seat to that miracle, my faith also received an upgrade.

I was witness to the other side of medicine, the family side, one that most people don’t get to see. For that I’ll always be grateful.

How about you, do you believe in miracles?
