Life Lessons

Servant or Friend?

“Did you hear the news? My friend asked.
“Queen Elizabeth of England died!”
I rushed to the TV and joined millions around the world, to watch news updates, commentaries, and documentaries about Her Majesty’s life.

It was late in the day when a documentary about the Queen’s personal life caught my attention. It delved into a day in the life of the Queen, surrounded by many servants, referred to as “Lady-in-waiting.”

A servant is a person who performs duties for others, a personal attendant, a person employed in the service of a government, or a devoted and helpful follower or supporter (New Oxford American Dictionary).

The term usually implies performing for pay, not for pleasure.

Much to my surprise, some of those servants spent more time with the Queen and knew her better than most of her family members.

She considered them “confidantes” and “best friends”.

Well, this is exactly the kind of relationship God created us for. And the kind of relationship He wants to have with us.

“You are my witnesses,” says Adonai, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you can know and trust me and understand that I am he-no god was produced before me, nor will any be after me Is. 43:10 CJB

Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, chose you and me to be His servants because He wants us to know Him, trust Him and understand Him so intimately that we can be His witnesses.

Surprisingly, the Queen’s servants usually didn’t get paid for their services.

They felt so special that they accompanied her out of pure love and loyalty until she died.

How much more special and valued are we that Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords chose to die a cruel and painful death on a cross for us.

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.

And we thought his troubles were a punishment for his own sins!

But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.

He was beaten so we could be whole.

He was whipped so we could be healed. Is. 53:3-5

He offers freedom, healing, joy, peace, love, hope and so much more to those willing to be His servants.

In return we get to be His witnesses to this lost and hopeless world.

And the best part is that we don’t need a lengthy resume, or special qualifications. We don’t even have to apply for the job.

He’s right by your side and mine, knocking at the door of our heart so that He can be our Lord, Savior, and best Friend.

Answer His call, open the door and let Him in. The King is waiting.
