Do you know how to Rest in Motion?

My life was turned upside down almost three weeks ago  when my dad died unexpectedly. Even though my gratitude for him not suffering is immense, my heart is limping from that chunk that was ripped off when he left. Right now my family and I are trying to navigate through this storm that took us by surprise. It’s time to practice what a fishing trip taught me a long time ago: How to rest in motion.  Except this time it’s God’s edition.…. Blue skies kissed the clear ocean water in the horizon. I grabbed my sunscreen, beach towel and camera and picked a spot on the front of the boat.…

    Servant or Friend?

“Did you hear the news? My friend asked. “Queen Elizabeth of England died!” I rushed to the TV and joined millions around the world, to watch news updates, commentaries, and documentaries about Her Majesty’s life. It was late in the day when a documentary about the Queen’s personal life caught my attention. It delved into a day in the life of the Queen, surrounded by many servants, referred to as “Lady-in-waiting.” A servant is a person who performs duties for others, a personal attendant, a person employed in the service of a government, or a devoted and helpful follower or supporter (New Oxford American Dictionary). The term usually implies performing…

    Lessons from a Pie

“My tummy hurts!” my little niece cried as she threw herself on the couch. “I wonder why you didn’t eat your dinner?” her mom asked, picking up the empty pie dish from the floor. “Turkey and veggies are not as good as dessert!” The adults in the room struggled to keep a straight face. “Honey, not everything we eat, or drink is good for us. Some foods make us strong, and some can make us weak or sick, especially if we eat too much of it!” She rubbed her tummy and dried her tears. “I know how she feels,” I said, holding my own stomach. “I know nobody wants to…

    Are You a Tightrope Walker?

“Why are you covering your eyes?” my husband asked. “It’ll be over before you know it.” “I can’t look!” I cried, “What if he falls to his death?” We were watching a video of Nik Wallenda walking across a Grand Canyon gorge on a tight rope. My heart raced and stomach curled up in a knot. “Can you hear him?” he asked, “He’s praising and thanking Jesus!” I had to open my eyes to verify the unexpected declaration. In an interview afterwards he declared: “it took every bit of me to stay focused”. He said that dust had accumulated in his contacts and called the walk unusually stressful. However, he…

    Trust

“Dad wants you to take this.” I handed my son a pill along with a glass of water. He stretched out his hand to grab the medicine without taking his eyes off of the TV, swallowed it and gave me  the empty glass. “Incredible!” I said to my husband. “His 9-year-old mind doesn’t even question what we’re giving him.” “Yes,” he responded. “He trusts us enough to place his whole life in our hands, knowing without a doubt that we’ll never do anything to hurt him.” Without realizing it, my boy’s thoughtless response reminded me of a truth that the Lord emphasizes throughout the Bible. “Trust in the Lord with…
